Olomouc yesterday and today

The history of Olomouc dates back four thousand years. It was mentioned for the first time as early as in 1055. Later in the course of the centuries significant architects, among them e.g. Christoph Dienzenhofer, left their unmistakable mark on Olomouc in helping to shape its appearance.

Holy Trinity Column and Town Hall The most remarkable architectural monuments are the Bishop´s Palace, St. Wenceslas Church, the Archbishop´s Palace, St. Michael´s Church, the Town Hall and last but not least the Holy Trinity Column which is listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site from 2000.

The town of Olomouc has always been a centre of spiritual and cultural development. Albrecht of Wallenstein and Gregor Johann Mendel studied here. And Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Gustav Mahler stayed in Olomouc.

The cultural life in Olomouc is outstanding. The town hosts a lot of cultural events all year round. Fairs and exhibitions regularly take place at the Smetana Park, especially the well Aerial picture known international Flora flower exhibition. It may be also interesting to know that in 2014 Lonely Planet published an overview of their top 50 "hidden gems" in Europe called Secret Europe. Discover a New Old Historical Capital
As countless tourists embrace the overt charms of Prague and Český Krumlov, the city of Olomouc (olla-moats) is practically unknown outside of the Czech Republic, emerging as the travellers’ equivalent of a special restaurant that is your own little secret. The main square counts among the country’s most charming, surrounded by historic buildings and blessed with a Unesco-protected trinity column. The evocative central streets are dotted with beautiful churches, many of which play host to a thrilling history. Explore the foundations of ancient Olomouc Castle at the must-see Archdiocesan Museum, then head for one of the city’s many pubs or microbreweries.
